Description:
Annuals or perennials.

Spikelets with 1 bisexual flower above 2 sterile ones, usually paniculate; rhachilla articulated above the glumes; glumes thin, as long as or shorter than the lemmas and overlapping them; sterile lemmas hardened, sometimes awned, glabrous or variously hairy; fertile lemma shorter than the sterile lemmas, less hardened, without an awn; palea with 2 nerves close together; stamens usually 6.

Distribution:  About 27 species in Africa (1 in India). (Meredith (1955) The grasses and pastures of Soulh Afica). Veldt grasses.
