Synonymy: Notodanthonia racemosa (R. Br.) Zotov, New Zealand J. Bot. 1:121 (1963); Rytidosperma racetoosum (R. Br.) Connor & Edgar, New Zealand J. Bot. 17:327 (1979); D. penicellata sensu J. Black, Fl. S. Aust, 107 (1943), non (Labill.) F. Muell.

Description:
Erect or straggling, slender tufted perennial, rather variable, 20-75 cm high; leaves fine, narrow, inrolled or flat and c. 2 mm wide, 5-15 cm long, glabrous to loosely hairy with tubercle-based hairs less than 1 mm long; ligule of very short cilia (c. 0.25 mm), collar hairs c. 1 mm long.

Panicles much exserted, 5-15 cm long, racemose, few- to many-flowered, branches finely pubescent; spikelets pale-greenish to straw-coloured, 6-10-flowered, the group of florets usually exceeding the glumes; glumes subequal, 7-10 mm long, 5-7-nerved; lemma linear to oblanceolate, 5-7 mm (including the 1.5-2 mm long, prominent and densely hairy callus; callus of lowest floret shorter); hairs of lemma 1-2 mm long at the base and in marginal tufts below the level of the sinus (often 2 poorly developed dorsal tufts); lateral lobes often broad, with membranous margins narrowing abruptly into fine awns 3-5 mm long (total length 7-8 mm); central awn c. 14 mm, twisted basal part c. 4 mm, straight and fine above, exceeding the lateral lobes by c. 5 mm; palea exceeding the sinus, elliptic, obtuse or 2-fid, 4-5 mm long, glabrous on the back; anthers 1.5-2 mm long, yellow; grain c. 2.5 mm long.
