Description:
Large shrub or small tree, unarmed, deciduous; leaves stipulate, petiolate, entire.

Inflorescence terminal, flowers solitary on short shoots; sepals 5, reflexed; petals 5; stamens 15-25; ovary 5-locular, inferior, styles 5.

Fruit large, subpyriform to globose; stone cells abundant; seeds numerous.

Distribution:  Monotypic, originally from western Asia. Widely cultivated in temperate regions for its large aromatic fruit.
