Crassula helmsii

Synonymy: Tillaea helmsii Kirk, Stud. Fl. N.Z. 142 (1899); Bulliarda recurva Hook. f., London J. Bot. 6:472 (1847); T. recurva (Hook. f.)Hook, f., Fl. Tasm. 1:146 (1856); C. recurva (Hook. f.) Ostenf., Dansk bot. Ark. 2, 8:46 (1918), non N.E. Br.

Common name: Swamp crassula.

Description:
Annuals with decumbent branches to 12 cm long and often much branched in marsh plants, or floating branches to 25 cm long and occasionally branched; leaves oblong-lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, 3-12 x 0.8-3 ram, acute to acuminate, rarely cuspidate, dorsiventrally flattened and slightly fleshy in marsh plants, green to brown.

Inflorescence a monochasium with single flowers in the axil of the leaf-like bracts; pedicels 4-7 mm long when fruiting; flowers 4-merous; calyx lobes triangular, 0.6-1 mm long, bluntly acute to usually obtuse, glabrous, slightly fleshy, green; corolla more or less cup-shaped, white; lobes lanceolate, 1.6-2 mm, acute, spreading to somewhat recurved when flowering; nectary scale oblong-cuneate, truncate, almost membranous, white; ovaries obovoid to almost obconical but somewhat tapering into the styles, each with 4-10 ovules.

Rarely 2, follicles smooth, slightly recurved, splitting along the whole suture but opening mainly by an apical pore.

Distribution:  S.Aust.: MU, SL, KI, SE.   W.Aust. (southern region); N.S.W.; Vic.; Tas..   New Zealand. Growing in and around standing water.

Conservation status: native

Flowering time: Aug. — Nov., but may continue as long as moisture is available. Image: Fig. 229C.
