Description:
Shrubs with spreading or decumbent branches to 50 cm high (without inflorescence); leaves oblanceolate to obovate, rarely almost orbicular, 3-10 cm long, 1-5 cm broad, fleshy, dorsiventrally flattened, green or often covered with a thick bloom, with or without a red margin.
Inflorescence 20-50 cm long, with flowers borne well above the leaves; flowers tubular, pendulous; calyx lobes usually broadly triangular, 2-5 mm long, acute, glabrous; corolla brick-red to orange, rarely yellow, tube cylindrical or almost so, 8-30 mm long, sometimes bulging at about the middle; lobes oblong-lanceolate rarely ovate, recoiled or recurved, stamens with the lower part of the filaments fused to the corolla tube; nectary scale transversely oblong, curved and fused at both sides to the base of the carpel to form a cup in which the nectar collects.
Carpels slender, gradually tapering into a long style with a small terminal stigma.

Of 5 varieties distinguished by Toelken (1979), Bothalia 12:615-620, only 2 have been recorded here. It must be noted that not all specimens can be clearly identified as one of these varieties, as they are known to hybridise in the field.
