Citation: Medikus, Gesch. Bot. 85 (1793).

Derivation: A name coined by Gesner possibly from cotonea for Cydonia the quince tree and -aster meaning wild.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: Cotoneasters.

Description:
Shrubs or small trees, unarmed, mostly evergreen; pubescent; leaves coriaceous, entire; stipules caducous.

Inflorescence a cyme or small corymb; flowers small, corolla white or pink; stamens about 20; ovary semi-inferior, carpels 2-5, ovules 2 per locule; styles 2-5.

Fruit a globose small pome with mealy flesh, red; pyrenes ("stones") 2-5, bony.

Distribution:  About 70 species in temperate Europe and Asia. Several species have been widely grown as ornamentals for their decorative berries.
