Description:
Shrubs with simple and/or stellate hairs; leaves sessile or petiolate.

Flowers solitary or in cymes, white to purplish-red, at least c. 2 cm diam.; petals 5, contorted; stamens all fertile; ovary incompletely 5-10-celled.

Fruit usually 5- or 10-celled.

Distribution:  About 20 species from the Canary Islands to eastern Europe.
