Perennials.

Spikelets 2-flowered, the upper flower bisexual, the lower male or sometimes all unisexual by abortion; glumes imbricate all round the rhachilla, acuminate, a few of the outer ones empty and shorter; stamens 3-6; no hypogynous bristles.

Nut crowned by the hard persistent base of the style.
