Shrubs, climbers or rarely trees as is usual in S.Aust.; leaves alternate, entire, petiolate and with spiny pairs of stipules on coppice shoots or juvenile plants.
Inflorescence an abbreviated raceme in a terminal position but in the fruiting stage often already overtopped by vegetative growth; sepals in two pairs of different sizes, colour and texture; petals in two more or less equal pairs; stamens numerous, exserted, with filaments folded or crumpled in bud; ovary globose, with a short style and terminal stigma, exserted at the end of a gynophore about as long as the stamens.
Fruit berry-like with a tough pericarp, indehiscent.
Pantropical genus of about 250 species often extending its distribution into subtropical regions of the world.
