Bromus arenarius

Citation: Labill., Nov. Holl. Pl. Sp. 1:23 (1805).

Synonymy: Serrafalcus arenaflus (Labill.)C. Gardner, Fl. W. Aust. 1:96 (1952). , Serrafalcus arenarius

Common name: Sand brome.

Description:
Annual 1-5.6 cm high, procumbent in stunted specimens, with glabrous stems; leaves densely pubescent or villous; ligule prominent.

Panicle loose, 35-80 mm, drooping with curved capillary branches and pedicels; spikelets oblong-lanceolate, spreading towards the tip at maturity; lower glume 3- or 4-nerved, 7-8 mm, upper 5- or sub-7-nerved, 10-12 mm; lemmas 12-15 mm long, 7-nerved, with a straight or curved awn about as long.

Distribution:  S.Aust.: NW, LE, NU, GT, FR, EA, EP, NL, MU, YP, SL, KI, SE.   All mainland States except the N.T.   Introduced into North America (California).

Conservation status: native

Biology: This is the only native species of Bromus. The species has affinities with B. japonicus Thunb., Fl. Jap. 52 (1784) and B. squarrosus L., Sp. Pl. 76 (1753) from the Northern Hemisphere.
