Description:
Thistle-like perennial herbs or shrubs; leaves radical or cauline, alternate, flat, dentate to pinnatisect with spiny teeth.
Capitula in terminal particles, homogamous or heterogamous; involucres cup-shaped; bracts partially connate, spiny, herbaceous, multisetlate; receptacle flat, scaly; ray florets sterile or absent; disk florets bisexual, fertile, tubular; anthers sagittate at the base, obtuse at the apex; style branches linear, obtuse.
Achenes obovoid, ribbed, glabrous or hairy; pappus of uniseriate scales.
