Description:
Perennial herbs with tuberous or rhizomatous rootstocks; leaves net-veined, petioles sheathing at the base.
Inflorescence a dense-flowered simple spadix supported at its base by a coloured bract the spathe, the upper part of the spadix a long flowerless appendage; flowers all unisexual, the lower few (up to 6) female, the upper c. 20 flowers male; perianth absent; ovary 1-celled; stigmas sessile.
