Description:
Annual herbs, spiny, with yellow sap; leaves with a more or less clearly defined petiole in the basal rosette, sessile above, irregularly pinnatifid to bipinnatifid, with lobes and teeth spine-tipped, bluish-glaucous with pale areas along the veins; sepals 3, free, spine-tipped, caducous.
Petals 6; stamens numerous; stigma discoid on a short style, persistent in fruit.
Capsule ellipsoid, dehiscing by 6 valves at the apex below the style.
