Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 395 (1753).

Derivation: Latin arbutus, the name for A. unedo derived from the Celtic ar boise meaning rough bush because of the granular berry.

Description:
Evergreen shrubs or trees; leaves alternate, narrow-elliptic to ovate-oblong or obovate-oblong, entire or serrate, with margins scarcely revolute, petiolate.

Flowers in terminal bracteate panicles; bracteoles 0; sepals 5, fused at the base; corolla urceolate, with 5 short revolute lobes, deciduous; stamens 10, with villous filaments; anthers with subulate apical appendages.

Fruit a globose berry.

Distribution:  About 20 species in northern America, Europe and western Asia.
