Description:
Fresh water plants, usually with a tuberous rhizome; leaves submerged, aerial or with a floating lamina, linear to elliptic, petiolate.
Flowers bisexual or female, with 1-3 perianth-segments (? - bracts), arranged in simple or forked spikes enclosed within a usually caducous spathe; stamens 6-16, free; carpels 3-6, free, with a simple style and stigma along the ventral surface of the style, with 2-8 basal ovules in each carpel.
Fruiting carpels membranous.
