Description:
Rhizomatous perennials with annual shoots; pedicels articulated below the flowers.

Bracteoles opposite, appressed to the perianth, the lower pair fused to form a small cup or free, the upper pair larger, often keeled on their backs and more or less similar in size and texture to the perianth-segments; perianth thickening in fruit, the lower fused part enclosing the ovary.

Seed lens-shaped.

Distribution:  5-10 species in the Americas.
