Alhagi maurorum

Citation: Medikus, Vorles. Churpf. Phys.Oekon. Ges. 2:397 (1787).

Synonymy: Hedysarum alhagi L., Sp. Pl. 745 (1753); H. pseudalhagi M. Bieb., Fl. Taur.-Caucas. 2:174 ( 1808); A. pseudalhagi (M. Bieb.)Desv., J. Bot. Agric. 1:120 (1813); A. camelorum Fischer, Cat.jar. Gorenki edn 2:72 (1812).

Common name: Camel thorn.

Description:
Shrub 30-60 cm high; stems woody at the base, much branched above; branchlets rigid, subulate, spiny, 1-4 cm long; leaves obovate to oblanceolate, 5-20 x 2-10 mm, rather succulent and gland-dotted above, more densely pubescent below; stipules subulate, c. 2 mm long, brown-pilose, caducous.

Inflorescence with 3-8 (sometimes more) flowers in a lax raceme; flowers 7-12 mm long, on pedicels 1-2 mm long; bracts ovate, c. 0.5 mm long, brown; calyx c. 3 mm long, glabrous or sparsely appressed-pubescent; calyx teeth inconspicuous, broadly and shortly deltoid, sparsely ciliate; bracteoles oblong, c. 0.5 x c. 0.2 mm, brownish, pilose; standard 6-12 x 4-8 mm, yellow and red like the wings and keel; ovary glabrous, compressed, 7-8 x c. 0.6 mm, style sharply upcurved.

Pod conspicuously moniliform, 20-30 x 2.5-3.5 mm, usually 3-6-seeded, occasionally 1-seeded by abortion, valves pale-brown; seed reniform, c. 3 mm long; testa smooth, pale-brown marbled blackish.
