Adonis microcarpa

Synonymy: A. autumnalis sensu J. Black, Fl. S. Aust. 364 (1948), non L.; A. annua L. and A. aestivalis L. were thought-by H. Eichler, Suppl. 149-150 (1965), possibly to be names applicable to S. Aust. specimens but were shown by Kloot (1976) not to be.
Common name: Pheasants eye.
Description:
Annual, 10-50 cm high; stem erect and usually branched; leaves 3-pinnate, with linear acute segments, to 6 cm long, glabrous.
Flowers terminal on stem and branches, 15-25 mm diam.; sepals appressed to spreading, ovate-oblong, 5-12 mm long, glabrous, a dark purplish brown; petals 5-15, suberect, obovate, longer than the sepals, usually yellow, rarely bright-red, with a black basal spot; anthers dark-purple.
Achenes 2.5-4 mm long, arranged in a head c. 15-25 mm long, each with a short straight green beak, the upper projection on the inner margin close to the beak.

Distribution:

In S.Aust. it occurs as a weed mainly in barley and wheat fields in the NL and northern YP regions.
S.Aust.: FR, EP, NL, MU, YP, SL, SE. All mainland States. Native to southern Europe.
