Citation: L., Sp. Pl. 1054 (1753).

Derivation: Latin acer, the maple.

Synonymy: Not Applicable

Common name: None

Description:
Trees or shrubs, usually deciduous; leaves simple or 3-5-lobed or compound; petioles long.

Flowers usually monoecious, greenish or yellowish, sometimes lacking petals; samaras winged on the upper side only.

Distribution:  About 200 species in cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Biology: A. campestre L. is the maple and A. saccharum Marsh is the sugar maple.
