The Census of SA Plants, Algae and Fungi

The Census of SA Plants, Algae and Fungi provides a summation of the current state of scientific knowledge of the flora of South Australia, as reviewed by the taxonomic botanists and research associates of the State Herbarium of South Australia.

You are able to generate lists of all or selected groups of plants for the whole State or for a selection of regions.

Current Coverage

Coverage of the South Australian Census has been traditionally confined to the vascular plants, the more prominent components of our flora, comprising the flowering plants, gymnosperms and ferns.

Since the publication of the Marine Benthic Flora of Southern Australia by Professor Bryan Womersley, the online Census has also been expanded to include the marine benthic algae.

It is anticipated that lists of mosses, liverworts, lichens and fungi known from the State will be available in the latter half of 2005.

The Census lists current scientific names of plants with their regional distribution within South Australia. Important former names (synonyms) are provided with each current name. Searches can be performed on current or former names.

Available files for download

With the production of the 5th Edition of the Census of South Australian Vascular Plants the Census is available as a printed book, as an electronic file (in pdf format), and by access to the State Herbarium's CENSAP database.

Online updates of the 5th edition will be produced periodically. The first update will be version 5.0
